Reduce the cost of travel insurance

Yearly policies, for example from insureandgo.com, are good value if you make two or more trips a year. Direct Line offer online discounts for yearly policies. Check out an insurance comparison website to find the cheapest options, e.g. moneysupermarket.com.

Consider how much cover you actually need and whether you might already have an insurance policy which covers you. For example, if you have life cover you don’t need your travel policy to cover your life, or if you have home insurance which covers possessions even when out of the home and abroad (as some do) then you don’t need travel insurance to cover those either.

Medical holiday insurance for free

If you’re travelling in Europe then you’ll be entitled to free or reduced cost state medical treatment if you carry the European Travel Insurance Card, which replaces the old E111 form. You can obtain cards from the Post Office, they cost £2 and last for three years.

Don’t accidentally buy insurance

Many companies, from rental cottages to airlines, package holidays to even concert bookings, will automatically sign you up for buying their travel insurance unless you actively opt out. Be active – uncheck the box.
